Body doubling online: work with someone there, even remotely

A lot of people with ADHD describe the same thing: alone, nothing starts; with someone else in the room, it does. That is body doubling, and the other person does not have to do anything at all. FocusSea puts you on a video call with someone who needs to focus at the same moment you do.

What body doubling actually is

It is a practical strategy: doing your thing while another person is present doing theirs. Not supervision, not help, not someone checking on you. Just presence.

People often describe it working because it makes the interruption visible: standing up after four minutes while someone can see you costs more than doing it alone. It does not land the same way for everyone, and most people find out inside the first half hour.

Why doing it online changes the equation

The problem with classic body doubling is logistics: you need a real person, free right now, who does not need conversation. In practice that person is almost never around.

Online, they always are, because everyone there is there for the same reason. You do not have to explain yourself, ask anyone a favour, or owe anyone one back.

How a session runs

  1. Pick a slot. There is one every fifteen minutes. You can see the calendar and how many people are online before you even have an account.
  2. Say your goal out loud. One sentence, not a plan: "reply to those three emails", "open the document and write the first paragraph". Saying it aloud is half the work.
  3. Twenty-five minutes. Mics off, everyone does their own thing. Camera is encouraged but never required.
  4. Two minutes at the end. You say how it went. Knowing in advance that you will have to say it changes how you spend those twenty-five minutes.

Things worth knowing first

Start with the smallest possible thing

You do not have to decide whether the method suits you. One twenty-five minute session tells you.

Weighted hours instead of hours sat down

At the end of a session you rate your focus from 1 to 10, and the time counts as minutes times focus divided by ten. It exists to stop measuring yourself by hours at the desk, which for a lot of people is a yardstick that only ever punishes.

A timer with structure

Sessions of 25, 50 or 75 minutes, automatic breaks, full screen, seven ambient sounds. Loop mode chains sessions together so you do not have to decide to start again every time.

Stats that show when you actually deliver

Focus by time of day tells you the hours when you genuinely concentrate. That is practical information: you put the hard things there.

Common questions

Do I have to talk to the other person?

One sentence at the start and one at the end. The rest is silence with mics closed. People looking for company usually leave disappointed: this is for working.

What if I get distracted anyway?

It happens. The difference is you notice sooner, because in a few minutes you will have to say how it went. Nobody tells you off and nobody judges.

Does it work without a diagnosis?

Yes. Body doubling requires nothing of the sort: it is an organisation strategy used by very different people for very different reasons.

Do I need my camera on?

No. It is encouraged because visible presence is the mechanism, but it is not required and nobody will ask you for it.

What if I have to leave halfway?

Then leave. There is no penalty, and the other person stays in their session.

Something worth stating plainly

FocusSea is a time organisation tool. It is not a medical device and not a healthcare service. It does not provide diagnosis, treatment or medical advice, and it is no substitute for a professional opinion. If you are looking into anything ADHD related, a healthcare professional is the person to talk to.
